Ptarmigan Peak Climbs

Postby bradydeal » Sat Jan 17, 2015 9:18 pm

Climbed Mixed Inhibitions today with Peter "Big Balls" Mamrol. Cragalaska describes it as a "a must do for every hardman"
Guess we're hard as fu** now!

Didn't end up on Carl's chockstone (P4) as time was running out and we were a bit puckered from the looks of it. Instead we head up into the 3 headed bitch area to the left and fired off the M8 crack that goes straight up the middle before dark.

Approach notes: Ice skates

We started the day on bikes but ditched them before the hill. Powerline Pass is an ice rink. Skis are out of the question as well. Best option would be shoes with micro-spikes.

Anyone been up and looked at Ptarmigan Pillar lately? I've got a friend I want to introduce to more alpiney climbing.

Not sure but I know Three Ring Circus is a great starter alpine route and it's in down Eagle River.

Lost a brand new 10cm BD stubby at the base of the crux ice pitch on left ski tracks. Should be buried in the snow right when the ice starts.

Let me know if anyone finds it

Does anyone know what the approach is like? Ski, hike, skate?

As of Saturday the 23rd. Didn't climb it, so I can't say how thick that is. Probably under the new snow now.

Tried out Ski Tracks left yesterday. The dirt is frozen and the first couple pitches are fun right now, through the chimney. The crux pitch, the ice after the leftward traverse, is thin-to-barely-there at the top. Doable, because I did it and I'm no savant, but I don't necessarily recommend it. If you do, definitely bring a spectre or two (I didn't, and was very sad). I didn't see any ice above that pitch from the hand crack belay, but we didn't climb any higher so can't say for sure.

Powerline is good for biking the first 3/4 of the way, then gets drifty and less good. Still worth bringing it if you have one though.

On another note, I took someone up there who wasn't ready for it and had a minor epic. We left a few pieces of gear behind (pink sparkly nail polish). I'll be going back up for them this week, if you head up there I would appreciate if you left them.
